Vice-President Kashim Shettima has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, arguing that the administration deserves recognition instead of criticism for measures aimed at stabilising and repositioning Nigeria’s economy.

Addressing participants at the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit in Asaba on Monday, Shettima said the government’s policy reforms were already producing encouraging results, citing increased capital inflows and stronger foreign reserves.

He maintained that although the administration inherited serious economic difficulties, recent indicators show the reforms are beginning to yield benefits.

“Professor Soludo, you have done a lot of things for the federal government, especially in informing Nigerians where we were coming from — from reserves of $3 billion,” Shettima said.

“When we were experiencing capital plight and scarcity, now we are experiencing capital inflows.

“Our foreign reserves have gone up to over $52 billion and counting in a turbulent world. Even the president deserves commendation and not condemnation.”

Shettima also acknowledged Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo for openly supporting the Federal Government’s reform agenda, saying the former CBN governor stood firm during the 2023 election period despite prevailing political sentiments.

According to the vice-president, Soludo had “defied the direction of the wind” by insisting that electoral victory would come through “grassroot support” rather than “blackmail and intimidation.”

He added that the Federal Government remains focused on improving Nigeria’s investment climate by partnering with state governments to eliminate obstacles facing businesses and investors.
