The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has ramped up its marine safety and environmental awareness campaign in waterfront communities across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as flooding during the rainy season raises concerns over boat accidents and water pollution.

The campaign, led by NIWA’s Abuja Area/Liaison Office, reached Abaji Area Council, where residents received education on safe water transportation, accident prevention and environmental conservation.

Addressing participants, the Area Manager, Hajia Aisha Eri, applauded members of the host communities for their cooperation and reiterated the Authority’s commitment to protecting lives, livelihoods and Nigeria’s inland waterways.

She called on residents, boat operators and community leaders to observe established safety regulations and embrace environmental best practices to reduce the risk of accidents throughout the rainy season.

Also speaking, the Emir of Kwali, Alhaji Adamu Aguma, commended NIWA for the sensitisation programme and assured the Authority of the support of traditional rulers in encouraging compliance with waterways safety guidelines.

The exercise aligns with a nationwide directive issued by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, mandating sustained public awareness campaigns in littoral communities on waterways safety and environmental protection.

In furtherance of the directive, NIWA’s Acting Managing Director, Alhaji Umar Yusuf Girei, has instructed all Area Offices nationwide to prioritise the campaign to curb boat mishaps and preserve the country’s inland waterways.
